Euskararen Etxea, or the House of the Basque Language, is located in the San Ignazio district of Bilbao, and was founded in 2004 as the result of a collaborative effort involving the Bizkaia Provincial Council, the Bilbao City Council and the Basque Regional Government. It is currently managed by the Azkue Fundazioa.
The House of the Basque Language’s aim is to serve as a benchmark and point of reference for those working in the field of Basque language, as well as for all Basque-speakers in general. To this end, it offers a range of services and resources:
Basque Language Information Centre
This centre contains interesting and useful information in Basque, Spanish, English and French about the history and current situation of the Basque language. Free guided tours are available.
Opening hours:
- Monday to Saturday: 10:00 – 14:00 and 16:00 – 19:00.
Free leasing of function rooms
Any cultural or social group for whom Basque is a key part of their activities is welcome to use any of the function rooms at the House of the Basque Language free of charge. These spaces are ideal for presentations, training courses and meetings.
The function rooms are available at the following times:
- Monday to Friday: 8:00 – 20:00
- Saturdays: 10:00 – 14:00 and 16:00 – 19:00
Cooperative Workspace
Through its cooperative workspace, the House of the Basque Language aims to foster collaboration and teamwork between different groups and people, while at the same time promoting and encouraging activities carried out in the Basque language. We are working hard to have this initiative fully up and running by 2021.
In the meantime, the workspace is currently being used by the following groups and associations: Euskaltzaleen Topagunea, Ikastolen Elkartea, 111 Akademia, Euskal Kulturgileen Kidegoa and the Azkue Fundazioa.
